Captive screws are characterized by a section with a metric partial thread, a smooth section (neck), and a screw head. In the field of fastening technology, captive screws are mainly used in the assembly of enclosures. For this reason, they are also often called "body bolts". In the ETTINGER product range, you will find a wide selection of captive screws in various materials with different drive types and thread sizes.
- Captive screw with flat head
- Knurled captive screw
- Captive screw with socket head

Captive screws in different materials
Depending on the material of the workpiece to be processed, the choice of a suitable captive screw will also depend on the corresponding material properties. In the ETTINGER product range you will find the right captive screw for every requirement:
- Stainless steel captive screws: Since stainless steel is rustproof, stainless steel captive screws are especially suitable for applications in which both the processed workpiece and the body bolt will be repeatedly exposed to corrosive environments.
- Steel captive screws: If corrosion resistance is not a priority, steel body bolts are a cost-effective alternative to their stainless steel counterparts. Steel captive screws are characterized by their high strength.
- Brass captive screws: In certain applications, captive screws made of brass are a sensible alternative to stainless steel body bolts. On the one hand, both brass and stainless steel screws offer very good corrosion protection. On the other hand, brass is also a good electrical conductor – with low thermal conductivity at the same time.
Depending on the application, the following surface finishes are available in the ETTINGER product range:

What's the difference between captive screws, collar screws and set screws?
The terms "captive screw" and "collar screw" are sometimes used interchangeably in the field of fastening technology. The difference is that the neck of a captive screw is almost the same diameter as its thread. In the case of collar screws, the shaft or neck is thicker than the thread. At ETTINGER, you will find the latter in their own section under collar screws. Set screws, on the other hand, have a continuous metric thread and no screw head. Expansion screws are also similar to collar and captive screws and are used in situations where increased elastic deformation is required. In contrast to collar or captive screws, expansion screws also have a thread-free section that is much thinner than the rest of the screw.
Products related to captive screws in the ETTINGER product range
In addition to various captive screw designs, ETTINGER also stocks matching products for body bolts, including:
- Screw locking for captive screws
- Swage standoffs and spacers for captive screws
- Spacer bushes for captive screws
If the right captive screw for your application is not available, at ETTINGER you can also request custom parts based on your drawing.
