Hexagon head screws owe their name to the special shape of their screw head, which has six outward-facing edges. Hexagon head screws are often simply referred to as "hex bolts" and should be distinguished from hexagon socket screws.
Hexagon socket screw (also called Allen screw):
In contrast to hexagon head screws, these variants have a round screw head with a hexagonal recess in the center. Hexagon socket screws thus have a hexagonal drive – you will find screws with a hexagon socket drive in the ETTINGER product range; for example, as both flat head screws and countersunk screws.
Hexagon head screws usually have a metric thread. Accordingly, the various thread sizes for hexagon head screws are indicated by the capital letter "M" for "metric" thread.
Typical applications for hexagon head screws
Since hexagon head screws do not have a recessed screw head, they cannot be tightened or loosened using a common screwdriver. Instead, appropriate wrenches are used for this type of screw – such as an open-end wrench or ring spanner. A socket wrench with slip-on sockets can be also used to adjust hexagon socket screws. This screw type is therefore ideal for fastening components in particularly confined spaces. To fasten a hexagon head screw from the other side, either suitable nuts can be used – or the screw can be driven directly into a threaded hole.
Due to their high strength, hexagon head screws are commonly used in vehicle construction and also in agricultural engineering. They are ideal for creating stable and secure metal connections.
As an alternative to the traditional hexagon head screw, which can only be fastened using wrenches or sockets, you will also find slotted hexagon head screws in our B2B online store – optionally made of stainless steel or plastic.
