Knurled thumb screws are characterized by a metric thread (M) and a large, knurled head with a ribbed side, which makes it very easy to grip. This is particularly advantageous if the screw connection only needs to be fastened "hand-tight" without the use of tools. Knurled thumb screws are often referred to as "adjustable screws".

No tools required – knurled thumb screws
Knurled thumb screws are used wherever screw connections need to be repeatedly loosened and retightened. Using a knurled thumb screw with an oversized knurled head eliminates the need for tools altogether since the screw connection can be loosened and secured very easily by hand. The metric thread prevents knurled thumb screws from working themselves loose. In most cases, screws of this type have a smooth head and are often used as ornamental screws on visible parts of products. However, there are also variants of knurled thumb screws with, for example, a hexagon socket or slot. - High-profile knurled thumb screws: This variant of the knurled thumb screw includes a connecting piece which prevents the screw head from resting directly on the workpiece. This ensures a particularly good grip when the screw needs to be loosened or fastened.
- Low-profile knurled thumb screws: With this type of knurled thumb screw, the head lies flat on the workpiece, minimizing the risk of injury.
In the field of fastening technology, knurled thumb screws are used (for example) to adjust surveying equipment or enclosures on medical devices and testing equipment. Likewise, knurled thumb screws are the ideal choice to ensure robust connections for certain components in mechanical engineering applications. The so-called "knurled nut" serves as the counterpart to the knurled thumb screw.

- Stainless steel knurled thumb screws and steel knurled thumb screws: Stainless steel knurled thumb screws are rustproof and therefore corrosion resistant. However, if corrosion is not an issue, then steel knurled thumb screws are a cost-effective alternative.
- Plastic knurled thumb screws: Knurled thumb screws made of plastic have the advantage of being very light, temperature resistant and non-conductive. They are also available with a UL94-HB and UL94-V2 flammability rating.
