Set screws have a metric thread (M) and are easily recognizable due to the lack of a screw head. Instead, screws of this type usually have a cone point, a flat point, a cup point or a dog point. Set screws are often referred to as "grub screws" or "worm screws". In the ETTINGER product range you will find a wide selection of set screws made from different materials with different thread sizes, drive types and profiles.
Set screws with different drive types in the ETTINGER product range
Our broad product range includes set screws with the following drive types:
- Set screws with slot: This type of worm screw can be tightened and loosened with a standard screwdriver.
- Set screws with hexagon socket: Grub screws with a hexagon socket can be easily fastened with a socket wrench with slip-on sockets. This makes them ideal for securing components in confined spaces.
Set screws with different profiles
ETTINGER stocks set screws with different profiles for almost every application: Set screws are not only used in the field of mechanical engineering to secure gears or shafts, but also to adjust measuring instruments, among other things. In daily life, set screws are found in door handles, for example.
- Set screws with a flat point: are a flexible option as they can be moved or readjusted at any time after use. Accordingly, they are predominantly used in parts of devices that require subsequent adjustment, whereby the set screw can be repeatedly tightened or loosened as needed. Set screws with a flat point are gentler on the material compared to grub screws with a cup point. Although they don't provide as strong a grip as the cup-point version, they are ideal for assembly work on delicate materials and surfaces that need to be protected from scratches.
- Set screws with a cone point: offer particularly good clamping properties. A taper countersink must be pre-drilled so that the set screw can be inserted. Subsequent adjustment is not possible.
- Set screws with a cup point: do not require a pilot hole (unlike set screws with a cone point) because they cut their own path into the material. Set screws with a cup point are characterized by a secure and tight fit. They are ideal for preventing two attached workpieces from twisting against each other. For a secure connection, worm screws with a cup point should always be screwed completely into a corresponding mating thread.
- Set screws with a dog point: are used in situations where transverse forces will act on the thread, which would otherwise cause the threads to gradually flatten out as the screw is rotated into the groove. Without a dog point, it will no longer be possible to turn the set screw at all after a certain point. When using set screws with dog points, a pre-drilled hole is required into which the worm screw can be driven.
