A captive washer is a special kind of lock washer that makes it easier to install screws. Fine retaining lips on the inside jam against the screw thread when the washers are pushed on, making these pre-assembled screws non-detachable and the connection more secure. Even if the connection is loosened, the captive washer remains firmly attached to the screw and therefore cannot be lost during maintenance work.
In industrial environments and applications, captive washers are used primarily in safety-relevant areas and on machines, vehicles and plants where losing the retaining washer would compromise the integrity of the system. These pre-assembled screws enable efficient processing in industrial manufacturing processes and during maintenance work – the washers remain in place throughout the entire process.

Plastic captive washers
Our plastic variants with retaining lips are made of polyamide 6 with the UL94-V2 specification and are available with outer diameters from 5.0 mm to 40.0 mm. They correspond to DIN 125, 433 and 9021 – versions with custom dimensions correspond to the diameters of DIN, but have a different thickness.
We supply captive washers made of soft polyethylene in small, medium and large diameters. The color code (gray, blue, red) makes it easy to distinguish between them. Our range also includes captive washers made of soft PVC with a hardness of Shore A 70, UL94-HB and a temperature resistance of up to 80°C, as well as variants made of vulcanized fiber to DIN 7737 with a small inner diameter for pressing on.
If you need the washer to fill the empty space between the screw head and the workpiece, our captive washer with a sealing lip on one side is the right choice. Made of polyamide 6.6, this captive washer prevents the screw thread from penetrating into delicate surfaces. It is available for screws with metric threads M3.5 to M8.
Metal captive washers
If you need captive metal washers, Ettinger offers toothed flat washers made from tempered, galvanized carbon steel from ETTINGER. Suitable for M4 to M8 threads, they have a minimum holding force of up to 445 newtons.
