A retaining ring can be used to prevent a shaft from swinging out during movement. It is important to ensure that shafts are additionally secured because they transmit rotary movements or torques from motors, couplings, belts, chains or gearwheels, whereby high forces are generated. Mounted in a bearing, a shaft rotates on its own axis, which is why retaining rings always work axially.
A distinction is made between form-fit and force-fit variants. With the former, the shaft itself is already attached by means of capstan nuts or a slot, therefore additional fastening of the retaining ring is not necessary. For a form-fit retaining ring, a combination of retaining ring and locking ring is required.
