When tightening a screw, washers distribute the applied force over a larger area. They are mainly used on pipes, hollow bodies, sheet metal and soft materials such as wood. These washers sit between the screw head and the bearing surface – which is why they are also called spacing washers or shims – and prevent the screw head from sinking into or digging into the material's surface. This is particularly important because the screw is normally made from a stronger material than the bearing surface.
By distributing the contact pressure, a flat washer reduces the risk of damage – especially since the screw head rotates on the washer and not on the bearing surface, which prevents scratches. For this reason, flat washers are often used on painted surfaces. At the same time, washers also increase the pretensioning force of the connection – so it is less likely to be loosened due to external factors such as corrosion or vibrations.
Typical application areas for flat washers include electronics production as well as medical, transport and communication technology, the automotive industry and mechanical engineering. Flat washers are not suitable for screws with countersunk heads, wheel nuts, self-clamping bolts and carriage bolts.
Which washer is suitable for which screw?
First of all, the washer must match the size of the screw, whereby the inner diameter should be slightly larger than that of the screw. For example, an M2 washer with an internal diameter of 2.2 mm fits an M2 screw. The design of the washer also plays a role. Washers in accordance with ISO 7089 (formerly DIN 125 type A), for example, are pretty much the standard in the field of mechanical engineering and are also available with a chamfer in accordance with ISO 7090 (formerly DIN 125 type B).
Another important criterion when choosing the right washer is the strength class of the screw: The hardness class of the washer should match this. An example: For screws of strength class 8.8, washers of hardness class 200HV should be used.
Ultimately, the right material can be selected depending on the area of application. Plastic washers are electrically insulating, lightweight and do not react to magnetic fields – this is particularly advantageous in electrical engineering, electromechanics and electronics production. Metal versions weigh more and are characterized by a high degree of robustness. They are used as mass-produced goods in many applications.
Washers in numerous variants and materi
ETTINGER's product range includes a wide variety of flat washers of varying thickness in different materials and with various inner and outer diameters. Outer diameters that are 1.8 to 2 times wider than the hole diameter are common for metal connections. For wood, the flat washer should be three times as wide as the drill hole. For this reason, ETTINGER washers are available with an inner diameter of between 2.2 mm and 13 mm, and an outer diameter of between 4 mm and 23 mm. While steel is the material of choice, other metal compounds and materials are also available in a thickness from 0.3 mm to 5 mm.
In the ETTINGER B2B online store you will find washers made of stainless steel, plastic and other materials in the following variants:
- galvanized, nickel-plated or burnished steel
- stainless steel (rustproof) A1, A2 and A4
- aluminum
- nickel-plated brass
- Teflon
- laminated paper, fiber or vulcanized fiber
- plastic:
- polyamide (PA) natural or black
- polyamide (PA) with 30% glass fiber
- polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) natural
- polyethylene (PE) soft
- polyoxymethylene (POM) black, red or natural
Washers in standard and special shapes
ETTINGER supplies flat washers in large quantities in the standard DIN, ISO and UNC variants. Stainless steel fasteners are particularly suitable for screw connections in corrosive environments. Austenitic steels (A2 and A4) are often used in the production of flat washers because they effectively resist deformation and corrosion and are also extremely robust. A4 materials are particularly tough and protect against corrosion even in salty air or in proximity to acids. Normal steel washers, on the other hand, require an additional protective coating for adequate corrosion protection. For this reason, ETTINGER also offers surface treatment for washers.
Order all types of washers conveniently online. The following special shapes are also available:
- Split washers: flat washers with a rectangular cross-section and spiral opening at one end
- Serrated washers: disc-shaped washers with inner and outer fan-shaped teeth, for more intensive fastening of screws
- Spring washers: washers with a corrugated and convex shape for securing screws and bolts in connections exposed to vibrations
- Shim washers: cylindrical flat washers used to affix bearings or compensate for play in shaft-hub connections
- Support washers: spring steel washers for use under high axial forces
- Large-diameter washers: particularly wide, flat washers for more extensive distribution of the tensile forces exerted by nuts and screw heads on thin sheet metal
- Rosette washers: conical shape for fastening countersunk screws to surfaces that are prone to scratches. If the screw penetrates through the material, a flat washer is also located between the nut and the bearing surface.
- Toothed lock washers or contact washers: washers with teeth that are used to secure the screw
- Conical spring washers: washers with a disk spring that prevents the screw connection from loosening.
- Captive washers: are captive on the screw thread and retain it in the drill hole
Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions regarding deliveries, high quantities or custom-made products. In addition to flat washers and rosette washers, ETTINGER sells other washer variants in various dimensions and materials:
- Lock washers
- Connection washers and clamping brackets
- Shaft collars
