Thread-locking screws have a metric thread (M) and are treated with a special coating. This is usually polyamide and is visible as a blue spot on the thread. In some cases, the polyamide coating is also applied around the thread. The positioning of the polyamide coating is defined in accordance with DIN 267 Part 28. Thread-locking screws prevent the tightened screw connection from working itself loose. These screws are available with a clamping coating or an adhesive coating.
Typical applications for thread-locking screws
Thread-locking screws combine the positive properties of fasteners and locking elements in one product. Another advantage of this type of screw is that variants with a clamping thread lock can usually be reused several times. By contrast, screws with an adhesive coating cannot be used more than once. Therefore, thread-locking screws offer an interesting alternative to other chemical or mechanical thread-locking solutions. Thread-locking screws are used in areas where vibrations or oscillations could cause the existing screw connection to loosen. For example, screws with thread lock are commonly used in industry, window construction, renewable energy systems, wind turbines, the automotive industry, and the medical technology sector.

- Lock nuts: Lock nuts are also known as stop nuts in the field of fastening technology. They include a polyamide ring, which deforms both plastically and elastically when penetrated by the associated screw. As a result, the lock nut provides a screw-locking effect without the need for an additional locking element. Unlike thread-locking screws, lock nuts cannot be used more than once.
- Lock washers: Lock washers are another alternative when it comes to screw locking. They can simply be slid onto the corresponding screw without requiring any tools at all.
