Lock washers are used to additionally secure screw connections that are exposed to strong vibrations and high loads over prolonged periods. They are much stronger than standard nuts or cap nuts and strengthen the screw connection, since the preload of the screw alone would not be sufficient in the long run.
Lock washers are fastened directly under the screw head, where their ribs partially dig into the substrate. Since they are helically toothed, the connection benefits from an additional form fit connection and also loosens less easily when shaken or vibrated. Common areas of application for lock washers are plant engineering and machine tool production. They are also widely used in the automotive industry.

Lock washers in a design of your choice
ETTINGER's product range includes lock washers in uncoated, galvanized or nickel-plated spring steel. The latter has higher strength than other types of steel. In addition to spring steel, ETTINGER also offers lock washers in grade A2 stainless steel. Washers made of this austenitic steel can be used in corrosive environments.
It is not only the material that determines the stability of the connection between the material surface, screw head and nut. It is also important that the preload is effectively transferred from the screw to the surface. Therefore, the ratio of the outer to the inner diameter must be correct for each lock washer. The rule of thumb for metal is 2:1, while a ratio of 3:1 is common for wood. ETTINGER supplies lock washers with inner diameters from 2.2 mm to 13 mm and outer diameters from 4 mm to 18 mm. The lock washer must also match the thread diameter of the screw. This is essential to ensure proper force transmission and to make sure that the ribs bite fully into the screw head.
